Wireless Radios Are used quite often in paintball. The Ref's use them constantly, but players can benefit from them also. They are good for keeping in touch with your base and other teammates to coordinate attacks and to get info on enemy positions. There are many type out there ranging from $15 to $300 or more.
Radio Shack is arguably the best place to purchase a wireless radio. They sell many different types depending upon your budget. The cheapest are the 49megahertz "toy" radios. They come in different styles such as the typical walkie talkie, and also the head mounted type that enables hands free talking.(VOX enabled) Some of these 49mhtz radios are quite good for paintball use and some have extended range up to 1/2 mile.
Another type are the CB radios. These have much farther range than the 49 MHz radios and usually have several channels. They are usually a little bulkier and heavier, but are usually worth the extra weight and expense. Typical portable CB's run from $40-$150
The newest type of radio in use on paintball fields are the "Family Radio Service" (FRS) band radios. They have a more reliable range than most hand held CB or 49 mghtz radios. The drawback of the FRS radios is the inability to communicate with CB radio which is cheaper. FRS radios have dropped in price drastically. 1 channel types from radio shack sell for $39 and are the size of a large beeper! Multi-channel versions are going for $79. The longer range and small size makes them worth the extra money.
Motorola and Cobra sell the highest quality FRS radios with the best features. Below are some radios that you may order online through Alternative Paintballs' associate program with Amazon.com.
The high end communication alternative is a VHF/UHF radio. These require a license to operate and are usually used by businesses only. They are rather expensive at $200 or more, but have the longest range up to several miles.
